7 Essential Insurance Policies Every Australian Aged Care Facility Needs

In Australia’s aged care industry, managing risk isn’t just about compliance – it’s about delivering care with confidence. Whether you operate a residential aged care home, home support service, or retirement village, your organisation faces unique exposures. That’s why aged care insurance must be carefully tailored.

At Atlantic Insurance, we work closely with providers across the care sector to structure policies that meet their specific risk profile, workforce model, and regulatory responsibilities. Here’s our breakdown of the seven essential insurance policies every Australian aged care facility should consider.

Public Liability Insurance: Everyday Protection for High-Touch Environments

Public liability insurance protects aged care businesses when third parties suffer injury or property damage due to day-to-day operations. In settings where residents, visitors, contractors, and care workers share space, the risk of slips, falls, and accidents is ever present.

Atlantic Insurance helps providers arrange public liability cover with adequate limits and extensions to address specific exposures like shared gardens, communal kitchens, or visitor programs. With increasing scrutiny on care quality and accountability, this protection is foundational.

Professional Indemnity Insurance: Critical for Clinical and Allied Care Services

Care providers aren’t just delivering physical assistance – they’re offering advice, medication support, behavioural guidance, and more. If a care worker, RN, or allied health professional is accused of negligence or breach of duty, professional indemnity insurance steps in.

At Atlantic Insurance, we ensure indemnity policies extend to your full clinical scope – from therapy coordination to dementia care planning. We also assist with managing claim responses and ensuring that cover remains compliant with evolving aged care legislation.

Management Liability Insurance: Safeguarding Governance and Compliance

Aged care executives, directors, and managers are increasingly held personally accountable for organisational decisions. Management liability insurance protects your leadership team from legal and financial claims tied to governance breaches, unfair dismissal, mismanagement, or regulatory violations.

Atlantic Insurance helps aged care organisations tailor this protection based on board structure, employment scale, and current risk appetite. It’s particularly vital for multi-site providers, NFPs, and operators navigating the findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care.

Property Insurance: Preserving the Facilities that Deliver Care

Your facility’s physical environment plays a major role in resident wellbeing. Property insurance protects buildings, contents, medical equipment, and specialised fit-outs from fire, flood, theft, and damage.

We regularly support clients with policy wordings that includes cover for refunds of resident bonds, glass breakage, lift systems, and business-critical technology. Atlantic Insurance ensures aged care property cover reflects both physical asset value and business continuity needs.

Business Interruption Insurance: Ensuring Continuity During Disruption

When an event interrupts operations, business interruption insurance helps cover ongoing costs and revenue loss. Whether it’s storm damage, water leaks, or utility outages, care doesn’t stop – but income might.

Atlantic Insurance structures policies to ensure aged care services can relocate, pay staff, and maintain continuity, even during serious disruptions. This helps protect both the organisation’s viability and the residents’ experience.

Workers’ Compensation Insurance: Meeting Obligations and Supporting Staff

Every aged care provider must legally hold workers’ compensation insurance. But beyond compliance, it’s about supporting care workers injured on the job – especially in physically and emotionally demanding environments.

From manual handling to shift fatigue, Atlantic Insurance helps providers assess their true staffing exposure and keep premiums aligned with safe work practices. Accurate coverage also supports rehabilitation and reduces long-term claim impacts.

Cyber Liability Insurance: Protecting Sensitive Health and Operational Data

Today’s aged care operators manage digital medication charts, financial records, and personal health information. Cyber liability insurance protects against data breaches, ransomware, and system outages – risks that are increasing across the care industry.

Atlantic Insurance provides policies that include forensic investigations, breach response, regulatory compliance, and legal defence. It’s now considered essential cover for any aged care facility using cloud-based systems or resident management platforms.

Choosing the Right Insurance Package for Your Care Setting

At Atlantic Insurance, we believe insurance should reflect your model of care – whether you manage a regional residential home or a metro-based home care network. A tailored insurance package considers your workforce structure, resident profile, services offered, and claims history.

The right insurance solution combines property, public liability, management liability, cyber protection, and business interruption to create broad protection. Atlantic Insurance brokers take the time to analyse risk across operations and advise on practical, effective cover.

Supporting Services, Specific Insurance, and Ongoing Needs in Aged Care

Aged care providers deliver more than accommodation – they coordinate transport, support services, community connection, and clinical management. That’s why Atlantic Insurance also helps clients explore specific insurance such as income protection, key person cover, and voluntary workers insurance for aged care workers.

Whether your risks lie in transport, food services, telehealth, or within the aged care administration team, we’ll ensure you support workers, systems, and leadership.

Solutions for aged care facilities must reflect not just today’s needs – but tomorrow’s expectations. As your services evolve, your insurance needs will too.
